Honouring the body God gave you

The GodlyNow Care Teamschedule5 min read

Faith is often spoken of as a matter of the heart and mind, but Scripture is deeply interested in the body too. How you rest, eat, move, and sleep is not separate from your spiritual life. Caring for the body God gave you is a quiet form of worship.

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?

1 Corinthians 6:19

Rest is built into the design

The rhythm of Sabbath was given before any commandment about work. Rest is not a reward you earn once everything is finished; it is a gift woven into how you were made. Constant busyness is not a sign of faithfulness, and exhaustion is not a badge of honour.

Small habits, faithfully kept

You do not need a dramatic overhaul. Stewardship of the body is mostly ordinary and repeated. Choose one or two of these and let them become normal before adding more:

  • Protect your sleep as you would an appointment, with a consistent time to wind down.
  • Move your body in a way you actually enjoy, rather than one you dread.
  • Eat at regular times, and notice the difference it makes to your mood.
  • Build one genuine pause into each day, even ten minutes, with no screen and no task.

When the body carries the weight of the mind

Stress, anxiety, and grief often show up physically first: in tense shoulders, broken sleep, or a tightness you cannot explain. If your body is telling you that something is wrong, it is worth listening. A counsellor can help you understand what your body is carrying, and a doctor can rule out anything physical. Caring for yourself in this way is not self-indulgent; it is honouring the gift you have been given.
