Scripture for seasons of grief

The GodlyNow Care Teamschedule7 min read

Grief has no timetable and no tidy shape. It comes in waves, returns on anniversaries, and visits at ordinary moments without warning. Scripture does not rush the grieving. It gives them words.

Permission to lament

Roughly a third of the Psalms are laments: raw, unedited prayers of sorrow and even protest. God is not frightened by your honesty. You are allowed to bring your anger, your questions, and your tears, and to leave them with him without first making them respectable.

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

Psalm 34:18

Verses to hold in the dark

When you cannot find your own words, borrow these. Read them slowly. There is no need to feel anything in particular; let them simply keep you company.

  • Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. (Matthew 5:4)
  • He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain. (Revelation 21:4)
  • Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. (Psalm 23:4)
  • Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning. (Psalm 30:5)

Grief shared is grief carried

We were not made to grieve alone. Sitting with a friend, your church family, or a counsellor does not mean you are failing to cope. It means you are letting others help carry what is too heavy to lift by yourself. If the weight has become unbearable, or if it is hard to function from day to day, please reach out to someone today.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4
